Ready to Pursue Elite Competition? Call Us Today
This high-performance program demands elite commitment, rigorous training schedules, and dedication to competitive excellence at the highest levels of the sport. We train athletes with USA Fencing ratings of D or higher who compete at national and international tournaments representing the United States and other countries. Our advanced program emphasizes tactical mastery, athletic conditioning, competitive psychology, and championship-level preparation in intensive training sessions led by Coach Forrest MacDougall—former Team USA international competitor and National Coach. From Junior Olympics to World Championships, you’ll receive the expert coaching and competitive support needed to achieve elite results and pursue your Olympic and collegiate fencing goals.
The Advanced Program represents the pinnacle of training at Precision Athletics Fencing Club. Athletes at this level are serious competitors pursuing measurable results: national championships, international medals, top USA Fencing ratings (A or B), high national rankings, and NCAA recruitment opportunities at elite institutions.
This program is not recreational. Advanced athletes commit to intensive training schedules, extensive travel to national and international competitions, regular participation in training camps and clinics, and the personal discipline required for elite athletic performance. The financial and time investment is significant, and success demands unwavering dedication from both athletes and their families.
Advanced training is led by Coach Forrest MacDougall, who competed internationally for Team USA and has served as National Coach for Cadets & Juniors at World Championship events since 2017. Our students have earned medals at international competitions and competed at World Championships representing Team USA, Mexico, and Korea.
Advanced classes operate at championship-level intensity with training sessions designed to replicate the physical, tactical, and mental demands of elite competition. Training emphasizes tactical sophistication, explosive athleticism, competitive simulation under pressure, video analysis, and strategic preparation for specific opponents and tournaments.
Class sessions are extended compared to beginner and intermediate levels, providing the training volume necessary for high-performance development. Athletes train alongside other elite competitors, creating an environment where the standard is excellence and every training partner pushes you to perform at your highest level.
Training Structure:
Advanced classes include coach-led instruction covering advanced tactical systems, competitive bout simulation at tournament pace and intensity, physical conditioning integrated with technical work, mental preparation and performance psychology, video review of competition footage and training bouts, and strategic planning for upcoming tournaments and NCAA recruitment.
All classes are co-ed, with boys and girls, men and women training together. At the advanced level, athletes fence opponents of all genders in both training and competition, as elite fencing rewards tactical intelligence and technical precision over physical attributes.
Advanced students also participate in Open Bouting sessions (Monday and Wednesday).
Private lessons are mandatory for all advanced athletes and provide the individualized instruction essential for elite-level development. Advanced athletes commit to a minimum of two private lessons per week, though many high-performing athletes train three or more times weekly with coaching staff.
Â
Private lessons at the advanced level focus on:
– Tournament-specific preparation and opponent analysis
– Technical refinement for competitive advantage
– Tactical system development and strategic planning
– Video analysis of competition footage
– Mental preparation and performance psychology
– NCAA recruitment preparation and competitive positioning
Â
Private lessons are scheduled by appointment. Athletes who do not maintain required private lesson frequency will not remain in the Advanced Program.
Â
The coach-athlete relationship in private lessons is where championships are built. This is where individual strengths are maximized, weaknesses are addressed systematically, and the strategic and tactical foundation for competitive success is developed.
Below is the complete weekly advanced training schedule. All sessions include intensive coach-led instruction and competitive bout simulation. Advanced athletes are expected to maintain high attendance and supplement group training with private lessons and Open Bouting sessions.

The Advanced Program demands elite commitment across all areas: training attendance, competitive participation, private lessons, physical conditioning, and mental preparation. The following requirements are non-negotiable for advanced athletes.
Athletes must demonstrate a current USA Fencing rating of D or higher, proven competitive results at regional or national levels, and high personal discipline. Advanced status requires financial and family commitment to extensive travel, willingness to prioritize fencing training, and strong coachability. Coaches evaluate technical proficiency, competitive mindset, and readiness for elite-level demands before accepting athletes into the program.
Advanced athletes must maintain near-perfect attendance at all scheduled advanced group classes (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday), minimum two private lessons per week, regular Open Bouting sessions, and all club-organized training camps and clinics. Frequent absences will result in removal from the Advanced Program.
Advanced athletes commit to minimum two private lessons per week, though many high-performing athletes train three or more times weekly. Private lessons build tactical systems, develop tournament strategies, and maximize individual competitive advantages. Attendance is tracked and factors into competitive team selection and NCAA recruitment assistance.
Advanced athletes commit to all national tournaments and scheduled international competitions including Junior Olympics (February), Summer Nationals (July), North American Cups, Regional Championships, and international events in Europe, Asia, and Pan America. Athletes and families must plan for extensive travel throughout the competitive season (September-July). Costs include USA Fencing membership ($85/year), tournament entry fees ($60-$100 per event), and travel expenses.
Advanced athletes must participate in all club-organized training camps and clinics for concentrated skill development and exposure to guest coaching. Training camps typically occur during school breaks and may involve additional fees. Attendance is mandatory and factored into competitive team selection and NCAA recruitment support.
Elite fencing demands elite athleticism. Advanced athletes must maintain high physical fitness through supplemental training including cardiovascular conditioning, strength and power development, flexibility and mobility work, and injury prevention protocols. Athletes take personal responsibility for their physical preparation with coach guidance.
Advanced athletes must own and maintain complete personal equipment meeting USA Fencing and FIE standards for national and international competition, including FIE-certified masks and lamés for higher-level events. Equipment must be in excellent working condition. Athletes are responsible for equipment maintenance, repair, and replacement.
A major focus of the Advanced Program is preparing athletes for NCAA recruitment and college fencing opportunities. Many top colleges and universities have varsity fencing programs, and skilled fencers have significant advantages in the admissions process. NCAA fencing schools include Ivy League institutions (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Penn, Brown), prestigious academic universities (Stanford, Northwestern, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Notre Dame), and strong academic programs (Ohio State, Penn State, St. John’s, Sacred Heart, Brandeis) across Division I, II, and III. Fencing provides a distinct pathway to elite colleges with relatively fewer participants than mainstream athletics, making skilled fencers valuable recruits.
What Colleges Look For:
NCAA coaches recruit fencers based on USA Fencing ratings and national rankings, tournament results at Junior Olympics, Summer Nationals, and NACs, international competition experience, competitive trajectory and improvement over time, academic performance (GPA, test scores), and character, work ethic, and coachability. Advanced athletes receive guidance on competitive benchmarks, tournament selection, rating goals, and recruitment timeline, plus assistance with coach communications, recruitment videos, and strategic planning.
Recruitment Timeline:
NCAA rules restrict direct communication between athletes and college coaches until after sophomore year, though competitive results during sophomore year are considered by recruiters. Before direct contact is permitted, coaching staff can make light introductory outreach to NCAA programs on behalf of their athletes. Once communication opens, advanced athletes work with coaches to identify target schools, build competitive resumes, create recruitment videos and athletic profiles, navigate official visits, and understand NCAA eligibility requirements. Success requires early planning, strong competitive results, and proactive communication once permitted.
